Chapter 10

It was good to finally be out of that tiny shuttle. I'd tried to keep my anxiety at bay, but it hadn't been easy. Travelling in tiny metal boxes wasn't what I was made for. I needed space. Luckily, this ship was immense.

It took forever for the air dock to spit us out into a large, empty room. The ceilings were several storeys high. Ladders led up and down the walls. This would be the perfect storage area, with enough room for loot from dozens of ships. The Athions were still opposed to us becoming pirates, but I knew Wren was secretly on our side. She wasn't as innocent as she seemed at first glance.

I turned to her and smiled at her wide-eyed expression. Her lips were slightly parted as she took in our surroundings. Those sweet, kissable lips.

I had to force myself to look away before I snatched her into my arms and kissed her. I'd agreed to let her take the first step, no matter how hard it was to wait.

"This is nice," Raf said, his eyes sparkling with happiness. "This will do nicely."

The Athions looked just as appreciative. We'd only seen this one room so far, and yet all five of us seemed happy with our new ship.

We'd have to give it a name soon. I agreed with Wren that it was a travesty for the Athion ship to have been nameless. I almost wished I could name this one Phoenix as well, but the Phoenix was gone. Dead on an asteroid.

"This will be for storage, I presume?" Wren asked, separating from our little group to walk around the massive room.

"Yes," I replied and joined her side. As always, her scent was intoxicating and I had trouble keeping a polite distance.

She smiled at me. "Shall we explore the rest?"

And then she took my hand. Just like that. I almost fainted.

Earlier, Kion had reached out to her and she'd held his hand for the entire flight. It had made me hot with jealousy. Now though, she'd taken the initiative. This was so much better than what Kion had got.

I resisted the temptation to turn around to give him a gleeful look.

Together, we walked up a flight of metal steps that groaned under our weight. We'd have to replace those. I didn't know what species had lived on the ship before, but they'd been either a lot smaller and lighter, or they hadn't cared about stairs collapsing beneath them. I may not have been bothered about it either, not until Wren arrived in my life. I had to keep her safe, whether it was from murderous Athions or rusty stairs.

A short corridor ended in another wide open space, almost as large as the storage hangar. This room however had furniture: desks and chairs were arranged in long rows, with shelves lining the walls.

"Is that an office?" Wren asked, confusion lacing her words.

I knew the feeling. I'd never seen anything like it on a spaceship.

"Raf, who owned this ship before us?" I asked without turning around.
